This was such a pleasure of a customer project to be part of. Friend and long time supporter of the Home of Tone, had this particularly well looked after, and to be honest, mint condition, MIJ (Made in Japan) J Mascis signature model Jazzmaster.

J Mascis. Mascis of alt rock band Dinosaur Jr is another artist whose signature model is a Squier rather than a Fender. Having played a range of different Fenders and with his first guitar being a Jazzmaster, it was only a matter of time before he had his own signature model.

July 2007 saw the release of a signature guitar by Fender, the J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster. The instrument comes in a Purple Sparkle finish and, while otherwise visually similar to a standard Jazzmaster, features a few modifications J requested.

Although Hendrix is most closely associated with the Fender Stratocaster, he played a variety of different guitars during his career. Including the Jazzmaster.

Mascis then switched to guitar as Emmett Jefferson “Patrick” Murphy (aka “Murph”) joined the band, and has since become widely regarded as one of the most influential and best guitarists of all-time—including ranking number 74 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists.

The Jazzmaster would remain in production through the 1970s, but sales continued to dwindle until it was finally discontinued in 1980. Jazzmaster production would resume in Japan in the mid-1980s, a result of strong Japanese demand and the continuing strong cultural influence of the Ventures.

Jazzmasters tend to sound a little chunkier than Jags, with more body and a stronger bass and mid response, whilst still retaining that top-end single coil clarity. Because the pickups have a physically wider wind, Jazzmasters have a wider frequency response than a Jaguar. They usually have a hotter output too.
